The 2024 RGS Scholarship Conference with the theme Breaking Boundaries, took place on 6 February, welcoming students, parents, Old Guildfordians, and local school attendees to the Auditorium. The event was also recorded to be shared with our international schools in Nanjing and Dubai.
Dr Anjan Dutta from the University of Surrey opened the evening with an introduction to the fascinating world of artificial intelligence. Dr Ana Dutta, also from the University of Surrey, talked about her work using satellite imaging to monitor progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, encouraging us all to think about the power of data in new ways.
After an interval, Old Guildfordian, James Miller, shared a hopeful message on climate change in his talk, “Here’s the Plan.” Dr Elodie Hudson’s journey through academia, finance, research, teaching, and data science provided inspiration. She encouraged the students to appreciate the boundaries provided by school and education, but also encouraged us to imagine beyond our preconceived limits, and go searching for boundaries to break that we may not even have considered.
A Q&A panel, led by the Senior Scholars Council, explored the theme Breaking Boundaries further. The conference’s insightful presentations and discussions proved to be a thought-provoking evening for all attendees.
