On Wednesday, 50 Third Form students travelled to London to visit the Legion exhibition at the British Museum. The exhibition shows some stunning artefacts relating to the Roman army, with the narrative thread of the life of one recruit, Terentianus, told through his letters to family, running through the show. Highlights among the exhibits were a genuine Roman shield, one lavishly-decorated sword recovered from the Thames at Fulham, some 1700-year-old socks (!) and the opportunity to handle genuine Roman coins including a silver denarius from the time of Augustus while waiting to enter. After the exhibition, each group had a whistle-stop tour of a selection of the ancient world highlights of the Museum including the Parthenon sculptures. An enjoyable and insightful time was had by all.
