On Thursday 5 December, the Art Department hosted an outreach event, welcoming Sixth Form students for a special “Portrait in Oils Workshop” led by renowned artist Andy Pankhurst. The event brought together young artists from six different schools, creating an atmosphere of creativity and collaboration in our art studios.
The workshop provided students with a extra-curricular opportunity to paint from a live model, focusing on the subtleties of capturing human expression and form. Under Andy Pankhurst’s expert guidance, the students explored advanced techniques in oil painting, including the ability to perceive and utilise temperature in their colour palettes. This approach deepened their understanding of tonal balance and allowed them to hone their observational skills.
Andy Pankhurst, a highly respected figure in the art world, brought a wealth of experience to the session. Having studied and worked under the legendary Ewan Uglow, his expertise spans decades of teaching at esteemed institutions such as UCL’s Slade School of Art, The Royal Academy Schools, and The Royal Drawing School. His ability to inspire and educate young artists is unparalleled, making this workshop a truly exceptional experience for all involved.
The day was not just about refining technical skills but also about encouraging students to see and interpret the world around them in new ways. Painting alongside peers from other schools fostered a sense of community and shared passion for the arts. By the end of the session, students had not only completed remarkable portrait studies but also gained invaluable insights into the creative process.
Events like these highlight the transformative power of art education and the importance of connecting young talent with seasoned professionals. The Art Department looks forward to hosting more such enriching experiences in the future.
