This week, the RGS Prep community has been celebrating British Science Week with a series of engaging activities, showcasing the staff and students’ passion for science. The week kicked off with an inspiring assembly by one of our Year 6 Form Groups, introducing the theme “Change and Adapt,” which set the tone for a week full of discovery and learning.
Throughout the week, students delved into a wide range of scientific topics. In one activity, they explored chemical changes by creating “worms” from sodium alginate, an experiment that sparked curiosity. They also had the opportunity to participate in live sessions with marine biologists, who discussed the fascinating world of manta rays and the important role of sea grass in carbon capture – an every increasingly crucial area of study due to climate change. Additionally, the pupils learned about selective breeding and adaptations on farms through informative discussions with farmers and geneticists via online seminars.
One of the highlights of the week was the investigation into how humans might adapt to life on Mars and the evolution of our solar system since the Big Bang. These lessons, along with many others, kept the students engaged and eager to learn more about the vast world of science.
The celebration culminated in the highly anticipated RGS Prep Science Fair, where Year 5 and 6 students proudly presented their projects. For three weeks, students had been working hard on their experiments, which were met with great enthusiasm by visitors from St Catherine’s Bramley, pupils throughout the school and judges from RGS Senior’s science department. The young scientists demonstrated their creativity and scientific methods, impressing the judges and their peers.
British Science Week at RGS Prep was an exciting celebration of science, sparking curiosity and inspiring students. The activities not only highlighted the school’s scientific talent but also encouraged students to explore science in greater depth. For many, the week may have sparked a lasting interest in pursuing science further, whether at senior school or beyond, shaping their future academic paths. It was a week that left a lasting impression, encouraging a passion for discovery that will stay with the students for years to come.
