Choir and Orchestra Tour to Segovia
At the end of Trinity Term, 70 students and staff from RGS and GHS went on a choir and orchestra tour to Segovia, near Madrid. Students performed in renowned churches and cathedrals, delivering high-quality music under the direction of Miss Wild and Mr Jones. Segovia proved to be a stunning area to explore, making for a memorable tour.
Fourth Form Engineering Trip
Shortly after term ended, a group of students set off on the Fourth Form engineering trip. The trip began at the Leicester Space Centre, featuring exhibits like a Gemini prototype and a 1930s-style spacesuit. They then visited Ironbridge, finishing the day with a challenging quiz. The following day, they travelled to Jodrell Bank to see the impressive moving dish. The trip’s highlight was a visit to Alton Towers, where the students enjoyed learning about theme park physics. The trip ended with a tour of RAF Cosford.
Exercise Tudor Tiger 2024: CCF in Wales
18 cadets and staff participated in Exercise Tudor Tiger 2024, an adventure in Snowdonia National Park and the Black Mountains. The cadets took on challenges such as hiking, navigating Devil’s Kitchen and experiencing Britain’s fastest zip line. A two-day canoe expedition along the River Wye strengthened teamwork, while gorge walking and rock climbing tested their resilience. The expedition offered a mix of physical and mental challenges, fostering teamwork and personal growth.
DofE Silver Expedition – Exmoor
From 27 to 30 July, 34 Fifth Form students completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Expedition in Exmoor. After an additional night away to refresh their skills, the teams successfully navigated the terrain, coping well with the summer heat. For many, this was the final step toward achieving their Silver Award, making it a significant and rewarding accomplishment.
Cambodia Expedition with Tormead
From 10 to 27 July, students from RGS and Tormead embarked on an expedition to Cambodia. After a 16-hour flight, they began their adventure in Phnom Penh, visiting a night market and a Genocide memorial. Students took turns as Team Leaders, managing the itinerary and budget. Jungle trekking in the Cardamon Mountains was a major challenge, with students adjusting to the harsh conditions. A week spent teaching at a rural primary school and contributing to a kitchen garden was a rewarding experience. The trip concluded with visits to Angkor Wat and Siem Reap.
Senior Rugby South Africa Tour
In July, 54 Sixth Form boys and six staff embarked on the Senior Rugby Tour to South Africa. The first week in Cape Town was met with severe weather, causing some excursions and fixtures to be cancelled. However, the group enjoyed surf lessons, worked with the Scrum5 Rugby Recycled charity and watched England U20s defeat South Africa. In Johannesburg, they visited the Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City Theme Park. The tour concluded with game drives in Pilanesberg Nature Reserve, where they saw the ‘Big Five.’ Despite the weather challenges, the boys had a great time.
